Five steps to starting a new social media account

Starting again isn’t easy. It can be nerve-wracking starting from scratch in a new place.
If you plan on taking the plunge, here are some tips that have worked for me.

1. Mark your territory

Fill in your profile, add a profile picture and a banner. Make a post or three showing your typical content across your first day. Let people know who you are and what to expect.

Bring your brand out to play.

2. Find your people

A quick fix to that zero followers/following is to search for friends.
Hit that “Follow” button every few hours across several days and say hello.

You don’t want to do it all in one go because you might make the platform think you are a Bot.

You also might look a little desperate.

3. Socialize

Comment. Like. Share. It is SOCIAL media after all.
Interact with others. Uplift folks in your community and niche.
Don’t be nervous talking to your favorites and/or the famous either. Heck, @ them in relevant posts if you’re feeling brave/cheeky/confident. But always be respectful.

4. Bring the bangers*

It’s time to grow your following.
If you’ve had a popular post elsewhere that would work in your new space, dust it off and post it fresh.
Just give it a shiny new outfit (edit) before showing it off.

This isn’t cheating. It’s called Content Repurposing and brands do it all the time.

This blog is a repurposed post. It’s like recycling: waste not, want not.

*Bangers (noun) slang for energetic, very striking or extraordinary. Also: sausage.

5. Create consistent content

Maintain the momentum by creating content your audience might love. Develop your social media strategy. Take some risks but maintain the vibe of the new platform. Create a new hashtag or three.
Help your brand blossom in this new place.

These five steps will help you start your latest social media journey. They don’t promise success or guarantee a huge following. That takes time, it takes luck, and it takes consistency with cracking content.

A successful social media presence looks different to everyone. However, most social media accounts that do well tend to have two elements: a strategy and a brand.
